About TruDiagnostic & This Role
TruDiagnostic is a fast-paced health-tech startup with a great culture and a focus on epigenetics. We have the largest private DNA methylation database in the world and work with research partners including Harvard, Yale, and Duke.
We’re looking for a hands-on finance leader who can help us understand the business more clearly and make better decisions as we grow. You’ll build and own our financial models, lead forecasting, and own board reporting, turning the details into practical recommendations for our CEO and leadership team. An upcoming institutional fundraise is one part of that work, with this person supporting Matt on the financial model and diligence. Experience supporting an institutional raise is helpful, but not required.
We have strong relationships across our team, and many members have followed our CEO from company to company after exits because of the culture and relationships he’s built. We move quickly, have high expectations of each other, and find it energizing to work alongside people who are really good at what they do. If you’re an A-player who enjoys being on a team of other A-players, you’ll likely enjoy working here.
We’re very intentional about protecting that culture. We take our time hiring and move quickly when it’s clear someone isn’t the right fit. The 15 Commitments of Conscious Leadership are part of our cultural framework, with an emphasis on taking responsibility, staying curious, and having honest, direct conversations. We care about both the work someone does and how they work with the people around them.
We’re also very AI-forward. We expect this person to already be using AI, proactively find opportunities to apply it in their work, and help the finance team do the same. This role will manage our VP of Finance, who owns the monthly close and manages two other finance team members. That’s the team we expect to have for the time being, so being comfortable staying hands-on is important.
What We're Looking For
We’re looking for a finance leader who enjoys building models, owning forecasts and board reporting, and staying hands-on with a small team. You may already be a CFO, or you may be ready to take a bigger step in your career. What matters is your ability to do the work yourself, your judgment, and your potential to grow with us. You should be comfortable digging into the numbers, forming a clear point of view, and helping our CEO and leadership team make informed decisions. You move quickly, take ownership, and can have honest conversations while building strong relationships. You’re already using AI in your work and are excited to help others use it well, too. Most importantly, you hold yourself to a high standard and enjoy working with people who do the same.
Required Qualifications
- Finance experience in diagnostics or health tech, ideally clinical diagnostics. You understand lab economics, reimbursement, and the financial needs of a business with significant R&D investment.
- Experience leading a finance function or serving as a strong second-in-command. You may have been a VP, SVP, EVP of Finance, or Chief Accounting Officer. Prior CFO experience is welcome but not required.
- Strong accounting and FP&A skills. Our VP of Finance owns the monthly close, but you should be comfortable getting into the details, reviewing the work, and helping resolve issues.
- Experience building and owning financial models, budgets, and forecasts. You understand the assumptions behind the numbers and can explain what they mean for the business.
- Experience developing a finance team and helping people become stronger in their roles. You’re comfortable working with the small team we have and staying hands-on.
- The ability to work closely with our CEO and communicate clearly with our board. You can make recommendations, answer difficult questions, and speak up when you see things differently.
- Meaningful experience using AI in your work and a proactive approach to helping your team use it well.
- A desire to grow into the CFO role and comfort with taking on that title as you demonstrate readiness for the full scope.
- High standards for your own work, a willingness to take responsibility, and the ability to build strong relationships through honest conversations and openness to feedback.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting an institutional fundraise, including building the financial model, preparing a data room, and responding to investor diligence.
- Controller and/or CPA experience
- Experience preparing financials for external audits and working directly with auditors.
- Experience improving financial reporting, systems, and controls as a company grows.
- Familiarity with multi-entity accounting, complex cap tables, and equity administration.
- M&A or corporate development experience.
- Broader experience in life sciences, including biotech, pharma, or medtech.
- An interest in epigenetics and the science behind what we’re building.
Growth Path
We’re hiring this person with the intention that they grow into our CFO. You’ll be involved in our upcoming fundraise and work closely with our CEO from the beginning, while also getting to know the business, strengthening our forecasting and financial processes, and developing the team. As you demonstrate readiness, we expect your responsibilities to expand to include full ownership of capital strategy, investor relationships, and corporate development. The timing will depend on the work you’re doing and your readiness to take on those responsibilities.
