Job Description

Why Join Hale CPA Group?

  • Innovative Environment: Work in an accounting firm dedicated to modern solutions and a high standard of quality.
  • Flexible, Remote Work: Our fully remote model offers flexibility while promoting teamwork and accountability.
  • Growth Opportunities: As part of a growing firm, you’ll have opportunities to develop your leadership and technical skills without sacrificing your home life.

About Us

Hale CPA Group is an outsourced accounting firm specializing in providing a modern accounting close to smaller organizations who don't have in-house accountants. We use modern technology to deliver streamlined, insightful, and actionable accounting support.

As we grow, we’re looking for a Financial Controller who embodies ownership, efficiency, and proactive communication to lead our accounting team and serve as the primary contact for our clients.

Role Overview

The Controller will play a key role in overseeing and executing monthly close processes for a diverse portfolio of companies.

As the primary client contact, you’ll lead a team of 2-3 accountants and bookkeepers, guiding them to deliver high-quality, timely, and efficient financial services.

We’re looking for an experienced, forward-thinking leader, who is tech-savvy, adaptable, and comfortable using cloud-based accounting platforms.

Do Some (Or All) These Scenarios Describe You? If So, This Is Your Perfect Job!

· At the Grocery Store: You walk down the aisles with a meticulously prepared grocery list, categorized by aisle number and item type. You calculate the total bill in your head as you go, and feel the sense of accomplishment when the register amount is within a few dollars. You reorganize items on the checkout belt to maximize bagging efficiency.

· Making Weekend Plans: When asked to hang out, you respond with a complete itinerary of the day’s events, including estimated travel times, meal options, and even a backup activity in case it rains. You seem to end up as the “designated navigator,” ensuring everyone gets to each stop at the precise time you planned.

· Assembling IKEA Furniture: You not only read the entire instruction manual before touching a single part but also organize every screw and panel in order of assembly. You double-check each step to avoid mistakes and then send a picture of the assembled furniture to friends with a message like, “This could withstand a tornado.”

· Watching a Movie: When watching a movie, you take note of all plot inconsistencies and logical errors and may even rewind to verify if a detail was missed. You’ll follow up by watching the director’s commentary to understand every decision—and might even present a short debrief afterward on how the plot could have been improved.

· Packing for Vacation: You start packing a week early, creating a packing checklist organized by clothing type, weather contingency, and possible social situations. You may even weigh your suitcase to make sure it’s under the airline limit and pack a digital luggage scale in case you need to recheck on the way back.

· At a Coffee Shop: When ordering coffee, you ask about the exact temperature at which the milk will be steamed. You also confirm that the coffee has the requested number of espresso shots and may adjust the sugar amount precisely. If given an incorrect order, you politely but firmly ask for a redo.

· Doing Laundry: Laundry day for you means sorting clothes not only by color but also by fabric type and weight to ensure an optimal wash cycle. You may even time the laundry loads down to the minute to be as efficient as possible and avoid wrinkling. Laundry is folded and organized by type, season, and frequency of use, possibly color-coded.

· Group Texts: In a group chat, you may feel frustrated with the random comments and “likes” and have an impulse to respond with carefully worded, logical replies—maybe even in bullet points—to bring some clarity and direction to the conversation chaos.

· At the Gym: You have a detailed workout plan, including target heart rates, rep counts, and rest times down to the second. You bring a stopwatch and clipboard to the gym, and while others might chat between sets, you are busy calculating your progress toward a monthly fitness goal. If a machine isn’t calibrated correctly, you might give a “suggestion” for improvement to the gym manager.

· Hosting a Party: When hosting a party, you have created a plan down to the minute, ensuring everything goes smoothly. There’s a schedule for serving drinks, a music playlist curated to match energy levels throughout the night, and contingency plans in case guests arrive early, late, or not at all. Afterward, you may review the event with a detailed post-mortem analysis on what could be improved for next time—likely documented with a spreadsheet.

Key Responsibilities

  • Client Leadership: Act as the primary contact for your portfolio of clients, managing expectations, delivering insights, and providing exceptional service.
  • Monthly Close Oversight: Ensure monthly close processes are completed accurately and on time across client accounts. This includes planning and reviewing for high quality.
  • Team Leadership: Lead a team of 2-3 accountants and bookkeepers, fostering a culture of accountability, efficiency, and collaboration.
  • Process Improvement: Identify and implement efficiencies within accounting workflows, embracing new technology and best practices.
  • Technology Use: Leverage and manage cloud-based platforms, including QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Ramp, and Gusto, etc, to enhance financial operations.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 6 years of accounting experience, ideally in a client-service or outsourced accounting environment.
  • Proficiency with cloud-based accounting tools (QuickBooks Online, Bill.com, Ramp, and Gusto).
  • Strong ownership mindset: able to manage tasks independently, take accountability, and ensure timely completion.
  • Excellent communication skills with a proactive approach to client and team interactions.
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with a team of at least 3 people. Leadership includes planning, holding your team accountable, training, and coaching / mentoring.
  • Adaptable and forward-thinking; open to continuous learning and improvement.
