Translucent Services

Controller

Remote, US$145,000-$200,000Posted 1 day ago

Job Description

Translucent Services is looking for a Controller who wants more than a seat in a large finance organization. We want someone ready to own the numbers, shape how a growing company runs, and grow with us into broader finance leadership. We deliver data storage implementations for leading storage and data platform OEMs.

As Corporate Controller, you own the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of our books, financial reporting, and internal controls. Transactional AP/AR and bookkeeping are handled by our outsourced accounting partner, so your time goes to the work that matters: directing and reviewing that partner's output, owning the month-end close in Sage, producing GAAP financial statements, managing cash, and coordinating payroll, multi-state tax, and external accounting relationships.

You'll be a key partner to the leadership team, working directly with the CEO and COO. You'll deliver decision-ready reporting (practice-level P&L, billing accuracy, and job and engineer profitability) and help shape pricing, investment, and growth decisions. At a company our size, your work is visible and your recommendations carry real weight.

Our culture is highly collaborative. Finance works side by side with operations, practice leaders, and field teams, not in a silo. We want someone who builds trust across the business, explains the numbers in plain language, and enjoys being a partner as much as a steward.

Your first year is about building: completing the transition from interim coverage, standing up a documented, repeatable finance operating model, and earning the confidence of the leadership team. From there, the role can grow as the company scales.

*WHY JOIN TRANSLUCENT*

  • Real ownership. You own the finance function end to end, not one slice of the close inside a large department.
  • Direct access to leadership. You work day-to-day with the CEO and COO, and your analysis helps shape pricing, hiring, and growth decisions.
  • A strong, collaborative culture. A tight-knit leadership team that shares context openly, works across functions, and solves problems together.
  • Build, don't just maintain. Design the controls, reporting, and systems integrations a scaling company needs.
  • Room to grow. As the company scales, this role is positioned to take on broader finance responsibilities.

*GROWTH OPPORTUNITY*

As Translucent grows, we expect our finance needs to grow with it. Over time, that may create opportunities to expand this role, first into a broader finance leadership position and, as the company scales, into CFO-level responsibilities such as capital and financing strategy, long-range planning, and owner reporting. Any future change in scope or title depends on business needs and individual performance.

*RESPONSIBILITIES*

  • Own the monthly, quarterly, and annual close; maintain a documented close checklist and calendar and drive close to a defined target.
  • Prepare GAAP financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow) and a monthly management reporting package for the CEO and COO, including budget-vs-actual commentary.
  • Serve as owner and primary point of contact for our outsourced accounting partner: define scope and SLAs; review and approve AP payment runs, AR aging, journal entries, and reconciliations; and escalate and resolve quality or timeliness issues.
  • Design and maintain right-sized internal controls for an outsourced model: segregation of duties, approval matrices, payment authorization, vendor master changes, and bank and system access.
  • Review all balance sheet reconciliations monthly (cash, credit cards, payroll liabilities, accruals, prepaids, fixed assets, and intercompany if applicable) and clear aged reconciling items.
  • Oversee revenue and billing accuracy for field services work; ensure completed jobs and billable line items from the work order system are invoiced accurately and on time to OEM clients, and track unbilled work and WIP.
  • Manage cash: maintain a rolling 13-week cash forecast, drive AR collections escalation, schedule AP to cash position, and manage banking relationships and any credit facility reporting or covenants.
  • Partner with HR to process payroll internally, and own payroll accounting and compliance, including general ledger entries, payroll liability reconciliations, and multi-state payroll tax.
  • Own 1099 and subcontractor tax compliance for third-party technicians and vendors.
  • Coordinate with our external CPA firm on federal and state income tax, sales and use tax, multi-state nexus, and annual filings; prepare year-end and any review or audit support.
  • Lead the annual budget and monthly forecast process with the COO; build and maintain practice-level P&L and job and engineer profitability reporting; support pricing and margin models for new service lines.
  • Advise the CEO and COO on growth decisions (new practices and service lines, hiring plans, pricing, and capital needs), and build the planning and analysis capability the company will need as it scales.
  • Oversee T&E accounting and policy compliance in partnership with operations.
  • Support Federal Darksite contract financial compliance requirements as applicable (e.g., labor-hour substantiation and cost tracking).
  • Own Sage administration and the chart of accounts; identify and implement automation and integrations between Sage and operational systems.
  • Document finance workflows (AP, AR, close, payroll) for operational standardization.
  • Perform other finance and administrative duties as assigned.

*PERFORMANCE STANDARDS*

  • Owns the month-end close independently within 60 days of start; close completed within 15 business days of month-end by day 90.
  • Monthly management reporting package (including practice-level P&L) delivered to the CEO and COO each month beginning by day 90.
  • Outsourced accounting partner operating against a documented scope, SLA, and review cadence within 60 days; AP and AR processed accurately and on time.
  • All balance sheet accounts reconciled and reviewed monthly, with no unexplained reconciling items older than 60 days.
  • Completed jobs invoiced within 7 days of completion.
  • DSO and AR aging targets established and tracked.
  • 13-week cash forecast maintained and reviewed with the COO weekly.
  • Payroll tax, sales tax, 1099, and income tax filings completed on time (with support from our tax advisor) with no penalties; year-end closes without material adjustments.

*REQUIREMENTS*

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance, or equivalent professional experience.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 3+ years as a Controller or Assistant Controller, ideally in a small-to-mid-sized professional or field services company.
  • Expert knowledge of GAAP, month-end close, account reconciliation, and financial statement preparation.
  • Demonstrated experience managing an outsourced accounting or bookkeeping provider: setting scope, reviewing work, and holding the provider accountable.
  • Experience with services-business revenue: project and T&M billing, WIP, and job costing.
  • Working knowledge of multi-state payroll tax, sales and use tax, and 1099 contractor compliance.
  • Advanced Excel; comfortable pulling and reconciling data from operational systems.
  • Experience building budgets, forecasts, and segment or practice-level profitability reporting.
  • A collaborative working style: comfortable partnering shoulder to shoulder with operations and practice leaders, not just within finance.
  • Must meet eligibility requirements for access to Federal Darksite contracts (e.g., U.S. Citizenship or specific security clearances), if applicable.

Preferred

  • Active CPA strongly preferred; CMA or equivalent considered.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage Intacct.
  • Experience with federal contracting or government subcontract financial requirements.
  • Interest in growing into broader finance leadership, including strategic finance and capital planning.
  • Experience leading companies through the DCAA compliance process.

*SKILLS & COMPETENCIES*

  • Ownership & Accountability: Owns the numbers end to end, including work performed by our outsourced accounting partner, and is the single point of accountability for financial accuracy.
  • Vendor Management: Holds our outsourced accounting partner to defined scope, SLAs, and quality standards; escalates and resolves issues quickly without absorbing the transactional work back in-house.
  • Controls Mindset: Designs practical, right-sized controls for a lean team with outsourced transactional accounting.
  • Business Partnership: Translates financials into operational insight for the CEO, COO, and practice leaders: margin by practice, job, and engineer.
  • Hands-On When Needed: Not a transactional seat, but able to step in and fix a reconciliation, journal entry, or billing issue when required.
  • Process & Systems Improvement: Documents, standardizes, and automates finance processes; improves data flow between Sage and operational systems.
  • Clear Communication: Delivers concise, decision-ready reporting to non-finance leaders.
  • Discretion & Integrity: Handles compensation, banking, and other confidential company information with judgment and discretion.
  • Collaboration & Trust-Building: Works across operations, practice leadership, and field teams as a true partner; builds trust by being accessible, transparent, and solutions-oriented.
  • Strategic & Growth-Oriented: Connects financial results to strategy beyond the close, and is motivated to grow into broader finance leadership.

*PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENT*

  • Ability to operate a computer and perform prolonged periods of sitting or standing at a desk.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms.

*COMPENSATION & BENEFITS*

The pay range for this role is $145,000 – $200,000 per year. Final pay depends on experience, qualifications, and location. This role is eligible for a discretionary annual bonus.
