Job Description

Controller (Mortgage)

Location

New York, New York (Hybrid)

Position Type

Full-Time

Role Overview

We are seeking an ambitious, tech-forward Controller to build and scale our accounting department from the ground up. Working directly alongside our Chief Financial Officer, you will help design and execute an automation-first finance function—leveraging an AI-native general ledger, warehouse funding optimization, and modern loan origination systems (LOS) under a rigorous internal controls framework built for SOC 1 Type II compliance and eventual SEC 404(b) public-company standards.

In this role, you will own day-to-day accounting operations end-to-end with a mandate to continually automate and streamline them. Every process you execute is a process you will help redesign for rapid scale.

What You'll Own

  • Core Operations: Own full-cycle AP/AR, GL accrual accounting, and vendor mapping across the finance tech stack. Manage the monthly close calendar with a focus on shortening cycle times every quarter.
  • Loan Lifecycle Accounting: Manage loan-level accounting and diligence from lock through settlement, including funding reconciliations, warehouse line activity, gain-on-sale calculations, and investor settlements.
  • Internal Controls & Audit Readiness: Execute and document internal controls designed for SOC 1 Type II reporting. Partner with executive leadership on IT audit design, evidence automation, and audit readiness.
  • Financial Reporting & Analytics: Build state-level and loan-level production metrics and ad-hoc financial models using an AI-native reporting layer to deliver board- and lender-ready outputs.
  • Process Automation: Continuously identify and eliminate manual tasks. Define system requirements, configure integrations, and test automated workflows across GL, LOS, warehouse funding, and internal operations tools.
  • Strategic Accounting Judgment: Make independent, technically sound determinations on classification, accruals, and complex process questions. Proactively surface issues alongside actionable recommendations.

Qualifications & Experience

  • CPA REQUIRED
  • 5–10 Years of Progressive Accounting Experience: Deep operational background in mortgage or structured credit accounting at loan-level depth (e.g., mortgage originators, whole-loan trading/aggregation firms, or private credit funds managing non-QM pools).
  • Technical GAAP & FASB Mastery: Expert level command of mortgage-related FASB codification, including:
  • ASC 310 / 320 / 860 (Transfers and Servicing)
  • ASC 820 / 825 (Fair Value Measurements)
  • ASC 815 (Derivatives and Lock Pipelines)
  • CECL Frameworks
  • Proven Operator: Demonstrated track record of owning financial closes, managing external audits, or leading enterprise financial system implementations.
  • Education & Background: Bachelor's or Master's degree in Accounting or a related field. CPA Required. Big 4 foundation is a strong plus; strong academic record and proven technical rigor are required.
  • Builder's Mindset: Comfortable navigating ambiguity, hands-on execution, and thrive in a high-ownership, fast-paced environment.

Why Join Us?

  • Ground-Floor Opportunity: Build a modern, tech-enabled finance department from scratch—gaining high-impact experience that typically takes a decade to achieve elsewhere.
  • Executive Mentorship: Work directly with senior financial leadership with extensive SEC, 404(b), and multi-platform lending leadership experience.
  • Clear Career Progression: High-visibility role designed to scale into broader financial leadership as the company grows.

Pay: $200,000.00 - $225,000.00 per year
