Job Description

Company

Black Dog Advisor Location: Orlando, FL / Hybrid or Remote Employment Type: Full-Time Compensation: $95,000–$120,000 base salary, with performance-based bonus or profit share opportunity

About Black Dog Advisor

Black Dog Advisor provides finance and accounting infrastructure for growing businesses that have outgrown basic bookkeeping and need stronger financial controls, cleaner reporting, cash flow visibility, KPI tracking, and CFO-level decision support.

Our clients are typically owner-operated, lower middle market businesses ($5M to $100M in revenue) that need a stronger financial back office but may not yet be ready to build a full in-house accounting department.

We help clients clean up their books, build better accounting systems, improve reporting, and create the financial visibility needed to make better business decisions.

We are growing and looking for a strong accounting professional who can help us deliver high-quality client accounting, reporting, and controller-level support while also helping build the internal delivery engine of Black Dog Advisor.

About the Role

Black Dog Advisor is hiring a Client Controller & Head of Delivery to own client accounting operations, monthly close, financial reporting, and accounting function buildouts for a growing portfolio of clients.

This is not a traditional bookkeeping role.

Many of our clients come to us because their accounting function has not kept up with the size or complexity of their business. They may have messy books, unclear responsibilities, inconsistent reporting, weak controls, poor AR/AP processes, disconnected payroll workflows, or a chart of accounts that does not support management decision-making.

We are looking for someone who does not just keep the books current, but can help build the accounting infrastructure behind the business.

The right person will be able to step into a client’s current accounting environment, understand what is working and what is not, clean up the books, improve processes, structure the accounting function, and help create repeatable systems that allow business owners to trust their numbers.

This is a hands-on role inside a growing company. In addition to client delivery, this person will also support Black Dog Advisor’s internal operations, client onboarding, process documentation, and overall growth initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Own the monthly close process for assigned clients
  • Review, clean up, and maintain accurate books across multiple client entities
  • Design, restructure, and maintain client chart of accounts
  • Build accounting workflows for clients who have outgrown basic bookkeeping
  • Set up and improve AR processes, including invoicing, collections tracking, customer aging, and revenue workflows
  • Set up and improve AP processes, including vendor bills, approvals, payment cadence, expense coding, and payables reporting
  • Support payroll accounting workflows, including payroll journal entries, payroll reconciliations, benefit deductions, tax liabilities, and integration with the general ledger
  • Review and reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, loans, payroll, AR, AP, deferred revenue, inventory, fixed assets, and other balance sheet accounts
  • Identify accounting issues, process gaps, control weaknesses, and reporting inconsistencies
  • Implement client accounting systems, processes, and close checklists
  • Build and maintain monthly financial reporting packages
  • Support KPI reporting, cash flow visibility, department/location reporting, project profitability, and management dashboards
  • Work with tools such as QuickBooks Online, Fathom, Excel/Google Sheets, and other reporting systems
  • Support implementation or cleanup work in systems such as Sage, Xero, NetSuite, Bill.com, payroll platforms, and related accounting tools
  • Communicate directly with clients in a clear, kind, and professional manner
  • Work with fractional CFOs to support higher-level financial analysis and strategic decision-making
  • Help document, standardize, and improve Black Dog Advisor’s internal delivery process
  • Coordinate with bookkeepers, CFOs, CPAs, payroll providers, and client teams as needed

Accounting Function Buildout

A major part of this role is helping clients build the accounting foundation they need to run their business.

The ideal candidate should have experience with implementing

  • Chart of accounts design and cleanup
  • AR workflow setup
  • AP workflow setup
  • Payroll accounting setup and reconciliation
  • Month-end close process design
  • Balance sheet reconciliation schedules
  • Financial statement structure
  • Class, department, location, project, or fund tracking

  • Reporting package design (Fathom)
  • KPI and dashboard setup (Fathom & BI Power)
  • Internal controls and approval workflows
  • Documentation of accounting policies and procedures
  • Client onboarding and accounting transition processes
  • Financial reporting cadence and close calendar creation

Startup Growth & Internal Operations Support

Black Dog Advisor is an early-stage growing company, so this role will also include support beyond traditional client accounting work.

The right person should be excited by the opportunity to help build the company, not just perform a defined set of accounting tasks. As we grow, there will be multiple hats to wear, systems to improve, and internal processes to create.

In addition to client delivery, this person may help with

  • Internal Black Dog Advisor admin and operations support
  • Client onboarding coordination
  • New client setup checklists
  • Internal delivery process documentation
  • Monday.com, HubSpot, Google Drive, or other system organization
  • Tracking open client items and follow-ups
  • Supporting proposal, SOW, and engagement workflow coordination
  • Helping organize internal reporting and company financials
  • Supporting hiring, onboarding, and management of future bookkeepers
  • Helping create templates, SOPs, close checklists, and reporting standards
  • Identifying ways to improve efficiency, quality control, and client experience
  • Supporting overall growth initiatives as the company scales
